RadKick 7-Speed and Belt Drive (2024) error 30 / connector check guide

Use this procedure to check the cable connections on your RadKick that may be causing electrical error messages or preventing the ebike from powering on. An error 30 message indicates there is communication error between the controller and the color display, which can be the result of anything from a loose connector somewhere on the ebike, a damaged electrical cable, or a faulty controller. This process will require you to power down your ebike, unplug individual cables and inspect them for damage, then carefully reconnect them and power on the ebike to see if that resolved the issue. Repeat the process with each cable until the issue is resolved, or you isolate the problem to a specific component.

The cables and troubleshooting steps are the same for the RadKick 7-Speed and RadKick Belt Drive models.

Tools needed:

  • Small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat-side cutters
  • Replacement zip ties
  • Electrical tape
  • Bike stand (optional)
  • Nitrile gloves (optional)

Take pictures of cable connections, cable routing and controller placement before you start disconnecting cables and removing the controller, as once you resolve the issue you will need to reconnect and reinstall all of the cables in their original position.

  1. Get the ebike ready for maintenance. Turn off the ebike, remove the battery, and press and hold the power button to discharge remaining power.
  2. Inspect the battery and battery mount terminal contacts. If the contacts are damaged, dirty, or wet, the part may need to be replaced. Take a photo and contact Customer Support for help. If the contacts are in good condition, set the battery aside for now.
  3. Inspect the main cables. The Color Display, Battery and Wiring Harness cables are the first ones to check, as if any of these cables are damaged or disconnected, your ebike will not power on. 
    1. Unplug each of the following cables (see diagram) one at a time. You may need to uncoil the cable cover to reach some of the connectors. Snip any nearby zip ties if you need cable slack, and pull each side of the connector apart, without twisting, to unplug.
      • Color Display
      • Battery 
      • Wiring harness
    2. Inspect the inside of the connector. If the inside is damaged, dirty, or wet, the part may need to be replaced. Take a photo and contact Customer Support for help.
    3. Plug the connector back in by lining up the arrows on the connectors, and push together without twisting.
    4. Reinstall the battery, turn the bike on, and check whether the error is resolved. Repeat the process for each cable one at a time to try and isolate the source of the error.
    5. To access the battery and wiring harness connectors you will need to use a small Phillips head screwdriver to remove the bottom battery mount inside the frame downtube. The controller is located in the frame downtube below the bottom mount.
    6. If the none of these cables are the source of the error, proceed to check the rest of the cables in the next step.
  4. Inspect the remaining cables. If the error continues, continue troubleshooting to  isolate the part that may be causing the error. The process for checking the connectors below will involve unplugging the connector and turning on the ebike on to check if the error continues while the connector is still unplugged.  
    1. Unplug each of the following cables (see diagram) one at a time. Pull each side of the connector apart, without twisting, to unplug. 
      • Front brake sensor
      • Rear brake sensor
      • Throttle
      • Headlight
      • Pedal Assistance Sensor (PAS)
      • Motor (mounted on the chainstay on the drive side of the bike)
      • Taillight
    2. Inspect the inside of the connector. If the inside is damaged, dirty, or wet, the part may need to be replaced. Contact Customer Support for help.
    3. Leave the cable unplugged, reinstall the battery, turn the bike on, and check whether the error is resolved. Repeat the process for each cable to try and isolate the source of the error.
    4. If the issue persists after checking all cable connections, contact Customer Support.
  5. Return cables to original positions and reinstall controller.
    1. Carefully return cables to their original positions and replace any zip ties. Use flat-side cutters to snip off zip tie excess, and ensure the cut is flush and smooth with no sharp point. Check thatandlebar to ensure that it can move freely.
    2. Reconnect the battery connector, PAS, wiring harness and taillight cable connectors (see diagram), and press together without twisting. Use electrical tape to bundle these cables together tightly so that they will fit inside the frame downtube opening along with the controller.
    3. Mount the controller in the frame downtube on top of the bundle of cables, and ensure they are pushed as far down as possible so that the battery mount can be reinstalled properly.
    4. Reinstall the battery mount in its original position, and use the screwdriver to reinstall the mounting bolts until secure.
  6. Reinstall the battery, test the bike fully, and ride Rad!
